Suribachi is a traditional Japanese mortar, designed with finely carved ridges to grind and mash ingredients such as sesame seeds, herbs, and spices. It’s also ideal for making dipping sauces and salad dressings, with a gently spouted rim that allows for easy pouring.

This suribachi was specially made for Senju, with the glaze and form carefully chosen to create a quiet, grounded presence. Made to move naturally from preparation to the table, it can be used as a serving dish once sauces are made. Warm, earthy tones and a softly flowing glaze highlight the movement of the hand-carved ridges.

Handcrafted in Toki City, Gifu Prefecture — the heart of Mino ware production - using techniques passed down since 1897.

Available in 3 sizes, each with subtle variations that reflect the handcraft behind every piece.

Please DO NOT use a stone pestle, as it may damage the ridges inside.
