The exterior is left unglazed so the texture of the clay can be felt directly. With regular use, the surface gradually develops a gentle sheen and becomes smoother over time.

Founded in 1916, the kiln began as a specialist in coffee and tea cups & saucers - among the first in Japan to focus on this field. In 1991, under the third generation, production shifted from large-scale manufacturing to smaller, more varied runs.

Today, porcelain continues to be shaped in Tajimi, guided by a century-long dedication to crafting mugs designed for everyday use.

The reduction process draws out subtle depth in tone and density within the material. The surface feels gently matte at first, gradually becoming smoother and more luminous with daily use. Designed for everyday living — simple, functional, and quietly refined.

A Century in Every Mug

Founded in 1916 in Tajimi, Gifu, Maruasa began when Asaichi Matsubara established the kiln and focused early on producing coffee and tea cups & saucers - among the first in Japan to specialise in this field.
