This handcrafted katakuchi matcha bowl by Kisenyou pairs a deep charcoal-brown clay body with softly flowing pale glaze accents. Fine throwing lines remain visible across the surface, while the small pouring spout and subtle variations in colour and texture give the piece an unmistakably handmade presence.

I first came across Kisenyou several years ago at the ceramic market in Toki and brought a small selection of their work home with me. The pieces sold quickly, so finding them again when I returned to the same market was a lovely surprise, and made even more special when they remembered me! This piece is from that latest visit, with more of Kisenyou’s work planned to become a regular part of the Senju Living collection.

Based in Shiga, Kisenyou creates each piece individually on the wheel, with an emphasis on lightness, gentle curves and naturally expressive glazes. The katakuchi form makes this bowl particularly lovely for preparing and pouring matcha, while its sculptural shape is equally beautiful simply enjoyed as a piece of Japanese studio pottery.
