Crafted from Japanese zelkova wood, each piece begins with timber that has been carefully dried for around six months. Skilled makers in Odawara carve every bowl by hand, even crafting their own blades to achieve precise, uncompromising workmanship.

Zelkova is a traditional material in Japan, valued for its warm red-to-gold hues and its distinct grain that clearly reflects the seasons in the wood. It has long been used for tableware, trays and even shrine pillars.

For the finish, a safe urethane coating — the same used for Odawara’s school lunch bowls — is applied to protect the wood while allowing the grain to stand out.

Versatile in form and size, it works beautifully for soups, salads and shared dishes, and suits any table setting.

Woodcraft from Odawara

Nestled in the gentle climate of Odawara in Kanagawa, Sonobe Sangyo draws inspiration from the region’s rich natural surroundings. From the moment solid logs arrive to the final hand-polishing, every step is carried out in-house with care. Their approach honours the full life of the material — using wood thoughtfully, minimising waste, and returning off-cuts to new purpose.

Crafted for Everyday Beauty

Sonobe Sangyo’s work brings warmth and purpose to the table. They shape Japanese woods such as cherry, beech, walnut and maple into pieces that feel natural in the hand and effortless in everyday use.

Each item is crafted with care - from rough cutting to lathe turning, long drying periods, and hand-applied finishes that protect the form while letting the grain shine. The result is a beautiful wooden piece you’ll reach for often, growing in character with every use.
