The Azuma bag has its roots in a simple idea: fold a square of fabric, tie the corners, and create a bag. Originally made using furoshiki cloth, it served as an everyday carry in Japanese households for generations.

This version keeps the same distinctive triangular shape in a sewn form. A button and cord closure at the fabric edge creates the handle, removing the need for tying while allowing the bag to sit comfortably by hand or over the shoulder. An additional cord attached to both ends can also be used to wear it as a shoulder bag when you need your hands free. The bag folds flat when empty, making it easy to keep on hand as a secondary bag.

Made from a linen-cotton blend, the fabric has a gentle structure from the linen, balanced by the softness of cotton. Each piece is indigo dyed using traditional techniques, then finished with a stencil-dyed pattern that adds depth and subtle variation across the surface. Unlined and without inner pockets, it remains lightweight and compact for everyday use.

Hand wash gently in cold water
Do not soak for extended periods
As indigo dye may transfer, wash separately before first use
Avoid direct sunlight when drying to help preserve colour
Slight fading and softening of the fabric will occur over time with use and washing
Due to the nature of indigo dyeing and stencil work, slight variations in colour and pattern may occur between pieces

Maker / Brand

Mono-ai by Aizawa Senkojo

mono-ai is the product line of Aizawa Senkojo (相澤染工場), a dyeing studio established in 1906 in Yashio City, Saitama Prefecture. The workshop has long specialised in indigo-dyed hanten — the traditional festival jackets worn at Japanese matsuri — using katazome (型染め) stencil dyeing techniques passed down through generations.

mono-ai was born from that same craft tradition. Working with the workshop's inherited stencil patterns, each piece is dyed by hand in natural indigo, one at a time. The name draws on two readings of 藍 (ai): mono-ai as "object and indigo," and mono-ai as "object and space" — reflecting the maker's intention to create things that sit quietly and comfortably in everyday life.
